What’s Trending in Custom Home Design? Q&A with Matt Stortz, Design Manager, TASS Construction Group
In our ever-changing world, new sets of building design trends continue to emerge.
Whether you’re focussing on more storage, more space, or maybe more flexibility, our team at TASS Construction Group are experts in bringing your dream home visions to life. So, what is trending in custom home design for 2023? We sat down with Matt Stortz, the Design Manager at TASS Construction Group, to discuss all things design, and what trends will emerge in the 2023 market.
Q: What materials are appearing to be trending in design?
A: In 2023, sustainability continues to be a trend within the design space. We’re seeing materials made from earth, or those requiring minimal waste in the production process leading the way this year. Some of the pioneering materials that we will continue to see trending include:
- Hemp
- Cork
- Bamboo
- Reclaimed or recycled steel
- Earthy materials
- Plastic… what!?
Yes, recycled plastic continues to make headways, particularly in the domain of interior design and soft furnishings, encompassing lighting fixtures, decorations, rugs, carpets, and even furniture.
People are becoming more mindful of sustainability, and we’re keeping up-to-date with the available materials and methods so we can deliver what they want.
Q: How will technology play a role in trending design?
A: As technology continues to evolve, we may see the use of 3D-Printed designs become more popular for custom homes. 3D-Printed designs, and even homes, are a new way to optimise construction and minimise waste, all the while streamlining logistics. This technology also allows for all kinds of designs that really push the boundaries – metaphorically and literally! Think curves, textures, and high-precision elements – they are all made simpler with the use of such technologies.
Q: Are there any trends influenced by rising costs of living?
A: We’re seeing an increase in custom design portable and mobile homes, as well as tiny homes. Many of these structures are sleek and prefabricated, with numerous aspects having the ability to be personalised. There are some beautiful designs emerging, with customised timber exteriors, or small interiors that optimise the space. These modern structures are perfect for anyone wanting to take on a creative project or looking for a more affordable home. They also make for great studio spaces for people working from home.
Q: What interior trends may we see in 2023?
A: Our modern lives have an impact on the space and design of our home. Interior designs we may see in 2023 include:
Grounding: The use of natural, earthy materials such as wood, stone, and clay can add depth and character to a space through their unique textures and imperfections. By embracing the natural and rugged character of these materials, we can create a grounding and calming atmosphere that connects us to the natural world, as their organic beauty brings an artisanal quality that can't be replicated by mass-produced materials.
Open-Plan Living: We’re continuing to see open-plan living as a popular design, and now with more of a focus on connectivity and interaction within the home. Such spaces can make the home feel more welcoming and friendly.
Quiet Spaces: Quiet spaces within the home are also becoming increasingly popular, with many home designs allocating a specific space that isn’t filled with distractions or clutter. These spaces focus on creating a place to retreat, and elements include:
- Large skylights to let in an abundance of natural light.
- Indoor gardens to bring elements of the outdoors, within.
- Personalised features to fit the homeowners’ preferences – this could include aspects such as a bookshelf for reading lovers, or yoga equipment for those looking to relax and unwind with meditation.
Clever Storage: The trick to a clean, uncluttered home is storage. With increasing amounts of objects and utilities in the home, having a large amount of storage is a necessity. The modern home needs to be designed with storage for everything, but it doesn’t need to look like a storage cupboard! Cupboards and storage spaces are perfect for hiding equipment and minimising the look of clutter.
