What’s Trending in Building Design in 2024? Q&A with the head of design at TASS
We sat down with our Head of Design, Matt Stortz to discuss what you can expect to see trending in building design in 2024. See what he has to say below:
What interior trends may we see in 2024?
Santorini vibe is still going strong. The rough white render with tropical plants aesthetics is abundant and not going anywhere. This can be incorporated in designs by introducing curves in windows, stairs and walls to soften the appearance.
We’re also seeing people stray away from open plan – after all this time locked up with our family, people want to have separate living spaces, so the whole family isn’t locked into watching the latest drama on MAFS.
Extra storage is another trend we expect to see a lot of in 2024. Recognising the practical need for organised living, there's a heightened emphasis on maximising storage solutions in interior designs. Because, after all, you can never have enough storage.
What materials are appearing to be trending in design this year?
In 2024, low maintenance material choices are key in material selection. This trend reflects a growing preference for practicality and efficiency, as individuals seek to enhance the aesthetics of their living spaces while simultaneously minimising the time and effort invested in upkeep.
Natural materials is another trend we are seeing. With the ongoing conversation about silca products and in particular benchtops, natural stones will see an re-emergence into the market, hopefully meaning some more colourful kitchens.
How will technology play a role in trending design?
As technological advancements continue to unfold, a transformative shift is evident in the way designers and clients engage with concepts. One noteworthy development is the ability to communicate in three dimensions (3D), a game-changer that transcends traditional modes of representation.
In this dynamic landscape, designers are leveraging cutting-edge tools to create and share intricate 3D models. These models serve as powerful visual aids, offering clients a more immersive and detailed understanding of the envisioned design. The three-dimensional perspective not only enhances the clarity of the design concept but also bridges the gap between the abstract vision and its practical realisation.
Are we seeing any trends influenced by rising costs of living?
With everybody feeling the pinch, this is undoubtedly affecting the market.
Homes in great locations are finding ways to ride the wave and find ways to add space, investing in the expansion and improvement of their existing homes, acknowledging them as not just living spaces but as crucial financial investments.
Buying and selling costs are huge, and can sometimes make more sense to design and build something bespoke to how you live and your lifestyle, rather than buying someone else’s house.
